Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields played host to the Ken Barnes Memorial Charity Cup recently which was won 4-1 by Joe Corrigan’s Man City XI featuring Eric Nixon in goal.
Paralympians Sarah and Barney Storey were the guests of honour for the match which drew together former City players from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s for Help for Heroes. Sarah and her husband were given a standing ovation as they were introduced to the players and supporters.
Thousands of Manchester City appearances have been racked up by members of the two teams assembled by Peter Barnes to commemorate his father and fellow club legend, Ken Barnes.Eric Nixon made many appearances for the blues.
Joe Corrigan and Fred Eyre picked their wits against one another on the opposite benches and fittingly the first goal arrived 10 minutes after the break courtesy one of the four soldiers from the Mercian Regiment who will return to Afghanistan in October.
Joe Bunney, Bob Lofthouse and Ali Pickering scored the other goals for Corrigan’s men.
Donations from the game went to Help for Heroes.
